I read the Q&A on the Catholic Insight web site and had a similar reaction. The response was accurate but the language was not accessible to the average person. I am not Catholic but because I host a blog for people of faith to explore the ethics and theology of genetic and reproductive technologies, I end up reading a lot of Catholic stuff. (Because, unfortunately, we Protestants don't often have much to say on the topic.) I agree with you that "...next to the breaking hearts of infertile couples, this language, I hate to say, just sounds hollow and elitist." I just posted a piece to the effect of--people access reproductive technologies, often, in response to some overwhelming pain (infertility, serious genetic disease), and that if people of faith want to be taken seriously when we question the ethics of these technologies, we need to take people's pain seriously too. Speak to them in language that acknowledges their pain. Your list of reasons is much more accessible than many. Going to add your blog to my feed now--Thank you for this!
Not everyone has children, but everyone has parents.
That is usually how I start conversations when it comes to ethical issues regarding the 'rights of the child'. It is hard to conceptualize that our rights need to be protected prior to our conception, since we do not yet exist. If you see life as sacred and valued, the easier it is to see this belief to have a stable foundation to build upon. It's not about life, its about the experience of having a baby. The baby's feelings are a non-issue, what matters most is that the baby is suits the parents wants. It's completely forgotten the baby grows up. |
