I am a Mum of a Retts Girl - Our Girls are "Silent A ngels". Yes it is hard to bring up and care for a child, with any disability, but I am sorry euthanisia is not an option. Why on earth did DOCS not see that this child was at risk knowing the parents opinion and their request for euthanasia and take the child i nto care. I am so distressed reading this article and would ask these Departents to use their common sense in these cases, you do not need A university degree, and make the right decision, get the child into a safe position. The child must come first not the parents!!
It's me again, the Mum with a Rett Girl/Silent Angel. I am incensed with these people and I would like permission sought to have them both sterilised as ANY CHILD is going to interfere with their "LIFE STYLE". Poor Darlings !! My daughter has been a challenge, a pain in the neck, brought me to tears but most importantly made me smile!!! These two do not deserve to have any children and I pray that they wo n't. I am not a Catholic but I am a Christian. My daughter has every right to be here and God help anyone who says different!!!!!
It is heart wrenching to read this story. The mother, who happens to be a swimming instructor, knew the dangers of water. She also knew CPR, but was "too freaked out" to try to help her daughter. With no charges being filed at this time, I pray for their young son. I hope he remains safe while in their care.
These parents were only just coming to terms with the diagnosis. They may have made some unthinking statements in public, but that doesn't mean the drowning was deliberate or the lack of CPR was a sign of intention to murder.
Please try to remember, what people say and what they do are not necessarily connected. If they were, practically everybody who's ever said anything would be in jail. Suggesting people should be involuntarily sterilised would attract the same jail sentence as if you actually went out with a knife and did it. As a parent you can have dark feelings alongside the shiny bright ones; you can love your child to the ends of the earth and (occasionally) wish you'd never had her, or didn't have to deal with her disabilities. Having a child go through months of unimaginable torment is about the worst thing there is. Who wouldn't wonder if death would be kinder? We can't all be perfect, but with support and understanding we can learn to be pretty damn amazing as parents. What this couple seemed to lack most of all was the support and understanding to help them past the initial distress and rejection, so that they could rise to the challenge.
With a reversal for Rett Syndrome symptoms demonstrated in mice, I cannot see how death is kinder. There is no hope in death. There never will be.
Police put everything down to tragic accident involving children to save paper work. We need a good dedicated Task Force with Police that really care about children and do not fall for crocodile tears to investigate all alleged drownings, killed in driveways, left in cars to die, fall over balcony or out of windows, wandering at night on streets or prams on railway lines or in ponds on children playing on railway lines or children gassed in house mother okay. Charges should be laid and gaol lengthy gaol terms without parole.
