It does sound discouraging, but since I can't read the original article I don't know what the exact questions were that were asked. There are questions like "did you follow the opinions of your priest" or "were church documents your primary source of information" that I would have to answer "no" to despite the fact that my opinions are in line with the magisterium.
These numbers aren't a shock to me, since so many Catholics have no problem ignoring Church teaching about birth control.
Remember that the press uses a "swinging-door" definition with respect to the word "Catholic." When they do these polls, they accept anyone who says (s)he's Catholic, even if (s)he has not seen the inside of a church in eight years. Then they publish the poll, implicitly suggesting that all the "Catholics" they polled are regular church-going, Lent-fasting Catholics.
Throw into the mix that so many Americans (of any religious system) STILL don't understand the ESCR and cloning issues, and that's a lot of salt to swallow with this. |
