Hello Rebecca,
I'm not sure if you've ever had the burden of being unable to conceive children, but if I generalize with many others who are critical of "IVF", than the odds are that you have never experienced what infertile couples experience. I'd like to clear something up here: IVF is the acronym for "invitro-fertilization", where eggs that are medically extracted from a woman's ovary are fertilized "invitro", or out of the womb by male sperm. To condemn IVF in its entirety based on unethical practices is quite ignorant. Excuse my strong language, but condemning IVF in it's entirety because of several bad practices withing certain IVF procedures is like condemning the use of morphine as a clinical painkiller because of it's misuse as a street narcotic. There are two ways in which human life is neither unnecessarily created or destroyed in order to become pregnant via IVF These are: cryogenic preservation of extracted follicles (which allows multiple follicles to be extracted and only 2-3 actually fertilized in an attempt to create embryos) or performing a "natural" cycle of IVF, in which the woman takes a minimal amount of hormone supplementation to create 2-3 follicles, increasing (arguably) the quality of the follicles. These follicles are then fertilized which ensures that no more embryos are created than that the woman's uterus could optimally handle. One more thing, IVF is not "human manufacturing" no more than a couple counting days in the woman's menstrual cycle to best pinpoint her time of ovulation. No human can force an egg to be successfully fertilized. The moment where the nucleus of the egg and the nucleus of the sperm fuse to become nucleus is beyond the control of any human being. We can "create" nothing. That is in God's hands. I agree that the "creation" of multiple embryos to increase the "odds" of pregnancy and live birth during IVF is immoral, unethical and simply wrong in my opinion. However, I will never condemn IVF in it's entirety. If used in conjunction with moral boundaries it becomes an amazing tool whereby couples can become pregnant and start a family, whereas it normally would have been impossible. This is not to discredit NaPro, and I will research NaPro more to see if it would the infertility issues that my wife and I experience (blocked fallopian tubes being the primary hinderance to her becoming pregant). God bless, Henk
Henk,
I am very sorry for your pain and heartbreak. Please do check out NaPro Technology. I know part of their care is to perform surgery to unblock fallopian tubes. That being said, just being conceived in a dish puts an embryo at greater risk of birth defects and it has been shown that IVF babies have different gene expression that those conceived naturally. This may cause problems later in life. We need to get away from the idea that creating life in a dish is the way to treat infertility. The way to treat infertility is to fix what is causing the infertility and then let natural conception take place. It is better for the embryo and better for the mother since she does not have to undergo the egg extraction procedure which carries its own risks,.
If it helps anyone, you can watch an informative video presentation on NaPro by one of the Australian practioners.
