There is a path for them, though they won't get to keep their children. It's called Snowflakes, where other couples will adopt their unused embryos. It would be a hard choice, but at least their children will have a chance at life.
That is uncertain morally since surrogacy is wrong as well. This is something many theologians are conflicted about, although it's understandable it's seen as a potential solution. They are faced with three evil choices (killing the child, leaving them frozen indefinitely, surrogacy), and this is one reason why IVF is so very wrong.
While the Church does forbid surrogacy it does not forbid adoption. That is what Snowflakes is. While the Church has not released an official teaching it is not forbidden. There is a slippery slope that IVF groups will create children for the purpose of selling them but the mission of Snowflake adoption is to try and right a moral wrong. Again it is a really difficult situation that shouldn't exist in the first place.
"The Catholic Church is often portrayed as unsympathetic to infertile couples. Because the Church finds IVF wrong, others mistakenly believe that the Church has no compassion for the pain and heartbreak of infertility. That is simply untrue. In fact, recently the Pope called for more research into the causes of infertility so that life could be created where it is supposed to be created, in a mother's womb and not in a lab."
I agree with the Pope on this although not Catholic myself. |
