IIRC -- in the original comics, there was a definite feeling that the Nazi destruction of the American super-soldier program was something of a matter of God using the Nazis as a scourge, to tell Americans not to try to make super-soldiers. (Especially since the attack was led by the Red Skull, who in the original looked totally horrifying from the beginning -- his backstory of starting as a normal human only showed up later.)
That's why Captain America always remaining someone on the side of normal humans and the normal US law, and remaining an underdog, however scrappy and strong and skilled, is very important to his character. He has to be an everyman who's constantly justifying his use of the unhuman stuff he's stuck with, not a superhuman. He has to be a transhuman who's not fond of transhumanism. (Though without being unfair to mutants, aliens, etc.) Of course, this is a very tricky line not to cross, and a lot of Marvel comics writers don't understand it at all. He's sort of a meeker Samson, really, and is supposed to have the same Jewish Biblical/folklore roots as a lot of Marvel heroes. |
