We do not vaccinate. My six (at the time) kids came down with pertussis a few years back. The youngest was 9-11 mo. I believe the true incidence numbers of pertussis are probably quite a bit higher, for two reasons. The first, I had no idea my kids had pertussis until the baby came down with it after the oldest had been coughing for a month. I just thought they had a lingering cough. They did not whoop, and I found out later that it is more common for infants and small children to whoop because their airways are smaller. But more concerning to me, when I did take my infant to the doctor for diagnosis, they told me that she sounded exactly like whooping cough, but they wouldn't diagnose her with it because "she wasn't exhausted enough"! She had it for around 8 weeks, and slept with us in bed so that I could perform infant Heimlich on her when she coughed in the middle of the night. She would periodically turn blue after these episodes, but she did not get pneumonia (which is usually what causes death from pertussis) because I made sure to position her so as to allow her to freely drain the mucus and not inhale it. It was an exhausting period of time, but now that we have twins, it was not even remotely comparable. With wisdom and attentive parenting, you can minimize the side effects of pertussis if you should happen to contract it. Previous reports I have read state that at least 50% of cases occur in the vaccinated population, so it is critical that parents learn how to treat it. I believe the effectiveness of the pertussis vaccine is waning; whether that is due to mutation of the virus or the modification of the vaccine to reduce reactions, I don't know.
