In fairness, the US never previously needed to "catch up" to the rest of the world because gendercide abortion wasn't previously an issue here.
It's like, apparently Apaches didn't actually have a cannibalism taboo. Not because they didn't think it was wrong; it had just never really registered with them that you could eat people—when anthropologists in the early 20th century asked about it, apparently the Apaches basically said "What's wrong with you, asking that?!"
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, San Marino, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom probably didn't have problems with gender ratios either but have outlawed sex selective abortions anyway. It is time we catch up.
No, I agree, we should pass the laws now, but there was a reason we didn't before—we never needed to. Unlike almost every country you just listed, America has a very strong tradition of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", for good and ill.
Now, since people are seriously suggesting sex-selection abortions, we need to "fix" it. |
