That is a much needed admonition. If I say "as a Catholic I believe" before "live begins as fertilization". Then I'm merely expressing a belief which a non-Catholic might not be expected to have. If I say "modern obstetrics shows us clearly that" before "life begins at fertilization", then I'm expressing a scientifically established fact. My religious faith sheds light on how this new life should be treated, but it does not tell me the new life exists. If that were the case St. Thomas Aquinas would have known life begins at fertilization, and he did not.
Excellent point RE: Aquinas. I've actually heard pro-abortion people point to Aquinas' placing of the beginning of life at "quickening" as some defense of the idea that life doesn't begin at conception—except that, as our embryology means the term "conception", Aristotelian biology meant the term "quickening". Both mean "when there's actually an embryo", and Aristotle's observational capabilities (given his technology) could only push the date back to a certain point.
Also, if the best argument they can make for their position is to invoke the authority of Peripatetic science, they probably ought to take that as a bad sign.
Excellent admonition, Rebecca! We must all be more careful in our language!
