Hope for 2013: Embracing human nature

Peering into the abyss of biotechnology, I have often mused that the problem with much of what goes on in fertility clinics and laboratories of the world is a denial of human nature. The denial that living human organisms, regardless of how they are created, are indeed human beings. They are small and immature, but human beings none-the-less.

This denial of the nature of humanity can be seen in nearly all the moral problems in our society: from the denial of the humanity of the unborn, the sick and the disabled; to the denial of our need of an intact family unit with both a mother and a father; to the denial that sex is a procreative event; to the denial that the safest most loving place to begin our lives is in our mother's womb, not in a laboratory; to the denial that the sex of your next child should be decided by God and not by you.

I was heartened that the Holy Father spoke about human nature in his Christmas address to the Roman Curia. It is the denial our God-given nature that threatens to destroy our families and our civilization.

Does, uh, Munkittrick realize that it's much more likely that human toddlers will be reduced to the rights of dolphins, gorillas, and parrots? It's always easier to make everyone equally miserable than equally happy.

Seriously, "You're dumb"? That's the best you got? Protip, braintrust, when you disagree with a point on a bioethics blog run by a biochemist whose day-job involves molecular biology, saying "you're dumb" without any actual substantive ARGUMENT mostly just looks like you're talking to yourself.

I admit, however, that you do pose a STELLAR challenge to the idea of a universally dignified, valuable human nature—notice that I did not say your ARGUMENT poses one.

Rebecca, have you noticed a decline in the quality of trolls lately? Recently, on a post where I was talking about STRING THEORY, I actually had someone come in and say "stop being a dumb@$$" (I've since disallowed anonymous comments). I'm sorry, did I maybe get a misprint in my dictionary? I don't think people who can't figure out how to sign a combox get to use that word on people who are discussing the search for a reconciliation of relativity with quantum mechanics.

Thanks for the defense. I no longer work in the lab (I am busy raising my kids. I do cover maternity leaves no and again.) but I keep up my certification as a Technologist in Molecular Biology for the future.

As for the trolls, I have had worse. But I think it is indicative of the modern "progressive" mind to think throwing insults equals victory. So very sad.

I won't stand for name calling on this blog, especially when it is an insult directed at the Holy Father.

Fortunately, you are the epitome of the "articulate" and "tolerant" progressive so we all can see right through your mud-slinging to the rank ignorance and hatred underneath.
