I dont think this article is professional. For one "[egg donors]are given hormones to ensure they produce more than the routine monthly amount of eggs — more means a better shot at success." isnt accurate. Women do not produce eggs each month and it is impossible to "release" more than one egg a month. Women are born with a set number of eggs, millions of them. More than any woman will ever be able to use. Then, each month, one egg is released into the fallopian tubes and into the uterus. If it isnt fertilized, it is bled out with the uterine lining.
Secondly, egg donation is usually used as a means of getting infertile women pregnant- not for cloning or stem cell research. The majority of egg donors, donate their eggs so that women with malformed eggs or with cysts can become pregnant with their healthy eggs. This information is all very, very basic and even if one knows NOTHING about egg donation, a quick Google search will fix that. The fact that an article cannot even report accurately on such a basic procedure makes me question the accuracy of this article and the amount of bias I am being fed. News should be neutral and fact based with all little tilt as possible, which this article is certainly not.
This article refers to the process of egg donation which induces hyper-ovulation with drugs and where, on average, 10 to 12 eggs are extracted at one time. This a process that has many risks including infertility and death.
Egg donation is critical to both cloning and embryonic stem cell research. Eggs are needed to create embryos through IVF for use in embryonic stem cell research and even more (lots more) are needed for somatic cell nuclear transfer which would create cloned embryos. The supply of egg donors is already limited. Cloning researchers need to have their own supply of eggs for this research. The concern of Hands Off Our Ovaries is that women will be not be informed about the risks by scientists who desparately need their eggs and in turn, that women will be exploited in the name of stem cell research.
