Hi there! I'm so glad I stumbled across this post.
I'm an undergrad genetics student, considering becoming a counselor, and in constant moral distress over this career. I read that GC is a pro-choice field, but as I learn more, I hear about pro-life counselors and exactly what a GC's obligations are. In your opinion, how should a Christian genetic counselor act to keep in accordance with God's Word? I'm not entirely sure if this career option is right for me if I don't want families to abort. I hope you can reply. Thank you.
That is a huge question that I am just not qualified to answer. The only thing I can say is that as a genetic counselor you will be giving people information and explaining their results. The decision to abort is in their hands. As long as you do not push abortion and give couples information about support groups and resources and what a gift life is, then I think you will be fine.
I do know that genetic counseling NEEDS pro-life professionals. It will be difficult but it will be rewarding as well. As this post shows, having NO information is scarier than having all the facts. I think you could save many lives by being there for families in their time of need. |
