Based on previous Saletan columns I've read I wouldn't have expected this reaction from him. Could it be that we are finally approaching the non plus ultra of choice?
Oooooh, yewjenics! Vewy vewy scawy.
NEWSFLASH: There's nothing wrong with eugenics so long as it is done correctly and without violating the participants' freedoms. The eugenicists of the Twentieth Century failed on both counts and gave eugenics a bad name. When a couple who are carriers for Sickle-Cell or Cystic Fibrosis take steps to avoid inflicting these diseases on their kids, that's eugenics too.
Did you read Saletan's piece? Considering that he is a pro-choice liberal I would carefully consider his words. They are full of wisdom regarding eugenics. He even points out the telling use of the word "inflicting."
Generally, "kill those who carry a genetic trait" is considered infringing on their rights....
