I actually support Agency rigor in approving stem cell therapies:
1) IMHO, they meet the definition of a drug as defined in the Federal Food and Drug Act, 2) I think the salient criterion from your quote above is "used for other than their normal function" 3) Any regulatory relaxation for ASC treatments would likely lead to similar relaxation for (potential) ESC treatments We know, based on the overwhelming evidence thus far, that ESC treatments exhibit both safety and efficacy. I see nothing wrong with formally documenting that safety/efficacy through clinical trials. I wonder, though, if the underlying issue isn't actually that there just isn't the same funding readily available for ASC clinicals, as there is for (the thus-far unfruitful) ASC research?
Chip,
"We know, based on the overwhelming evidence thus far, that ESC treatments exhibit both safety and efficacy." I think you meant ASC there and ESC here: "as there is for (the thus-far unfruitful) ASC research?"
Oops, yeah, sorry Rebecca! That was supposed to be ESC, not ASC.
(There needs to be, you know, an actual ASC treatment tried in a human before we can even begin to discuss the efficacy - or lack thereof - of ASC.)
Crap; wrote it backwards again. ASC - Adult - not ESC. It's been a long day...
The trouble is, the prolifers get the blame! "Oh, those mean old fetus lovers are opposed to cures for my loved one!"
Never mind that we're the ones pushing for ASCR.
There are adult stem cell therapies available in the United States, even in your own state. These are considered "Investigational" and are very expensive, but at least they are available.
