In response to Scott Rothschild's article in the Lawrence Journal World.
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2006/jan/05/poll_kansans_support_embryonic_stem_cell_research/?breaking Dear Mr. Rothschild, I am writing to inform you of errors in your article in the Lawrence Journal World (1/5/06) titiled "Poll: Kansans support embryonic stem cell research." You wrote the following describing somatic nuclear transfer: "In the somatic transfer process, DNA is transplanted into a woman’s unfertilized egg. The egg is then stimulated to divide, as it would when fertilized by a sperm, and stem cells are harvested. Opponents of the process say it amounts to abusing human life and experimenting with human cloning because the cells could develop further if implanted in a uterus." Actually, once the nucleus is transpanted, the "egg" ceases to exist and an EMBRYO is formed. Also, it is not "cells" that could develop further if implanted but that same EMBRYO. Please view this excellent tutorial on nuclear transfer by Princton's Dept. of Molecular Biology: http://www.molbio.princeton.edu/courses/mb427/2001/projects/09/transfertutorial.htm In addition you wrote this about the somactice transfer process: "But the coalition says it is not the same as cloning, and that they would support banning human cloning." Actually, somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is always cloning, regardless of whether the cloned embryo is implanted in a uterus or not. Once again, please refer to the following page on nuclear transfer on the Princeton site: http://www.molbio.princeton.edu/courses/mb427/2001/projects/09/transfer.htm Because it is important that the public truly understand these processes before they can make informed decisions, I ask that you please print a correction to these errors. Sincerely, Rebecca Taylor
Ankuet and Rayilyn,
I am going to move these comments to a separte entry for this blog. Our discussion is about cloning and ESC in general and not so much about the Clone the Truth campaign. Also I think it will get more people reading that way. Until then I will moderate any more comments to make sure they make it over. Here is the link: http://www.marymeetsdolly.com/blog/index.php?/archives/107-Opposition-to-the-Clone-the-Truth-campaign.html Also, Anuket, I will place a link to your blog on my list of blogs of interest. I look forward to reading more
Rebecca, it is okay. i'm very tired and have said all I want to say. I follow the research closely and like Anuket, my life depends on it. I just don't believe these cells are people. I have a bumper sticker on my car that says "Stem Cells are not people" and I think that says it all.
I can only get to the other site if a friend on my Parkinson's site sends it to me. Ray
Rayilyn,
Thank-you for your input. I hope that a cure is quickly forthcoming. |
