Should the Obama Admin duplicate Bush policy and just draw another "line in the sand"? They could propose that only embriotic stem cell lines already in existence would qualify. This would probably include a considerable expansion over the 22 lines Bush allowed, but would again remove the incentive to destroy new embryos.
I guess technically that would get around the Dickey-Wicker Amendment, but I envision a scenario where they just put the restictions in place every year saying that there is funding only for lines created before that date. It would still be in violation of the spirit of Dickey-Wicker.
My issue is that $127 million is going to be spent on research that has a slim chance of treating actual patients (because of tumor issues) maybe 20 years from now. That money is being diverted from other research that has shown more clinical promise. Which is exactly what this lawsuit was about. I want that $127 million to fund research and clinical trials with adult stem cells that are going on right now which will help the most the fastest.
Yah.......... This is really true that Funding ESC Research is same as funding the destruction of Embroys..
